Since its inception, the Food and Drug Administration has regulated drug quality. In 2012, Congress passed the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act, and as part of the FDA, it also took on the role of trying to understand and prevent supply chain and drug shortages.
You might think that, as drug shortages became a concern, there was fear that plant managers' shift in attention toward quality concerns would cause supply to dip further, leading to even greater future shortages. Gies researchers Iris Wang and Gopesh Anand found just the opposite. In this episode of Research Reverb, they share how they refuted a 2019 study that had indicated that, as the FDA posed an Official Action Indicated, where improvements were required, the drug supply slowed.
