The PhD program in Business Administration at Gies prepares students to excel at two primary academic roles: knowledge creation and knowledge dissemination. Faculty and administration strive to continuously improve our training of the next generation of academics and practitioners.

Our curriculum ensures the right approach for our students by accounting for their needs and delivering an impactful experience. On average, students finish the program in five years. Below is an outline of a five-year case of study:

Fall Semester
 Scholarship in Business Administration I - Substantive and Theoretical Perspectives 2 hours
 Courses in Area of Concentration/Minor/Research Methodology 12 hours
 Pro-seminar in Area of Concentration 0 hours


Spring Semester
 Scholarship in Business Administration I - Methodological and Philosophical Perspectives 2 hours
 Courses in Area of Concentration/Minor/Research Methodology 12 hours
 Pro-seminar in Area of Concentration 0 hours

 

 

Program Outline - Second Year
Both Semesters
 Courses in Area of Concentration/Minor/Research Methodology 12-14 hours
 Pro-seminar in Area of Concentration 0-2 hours

 

Program Outline - Third Year

Students may take any appropriate courses to build their research skills and depth of knowledge in their selected area of study or to fulfill the requirement of breadth in business-related disciplines.

Proposal Defended/Preliminary Examination Passed by the end of Year 3.

Program Outline - Fourth Year Students are required to register for dissertation credits. A total of 32 hours are required for graduation.
Program Outline - Final Thesis Defense Students should check with their assigned advisor for the schedule of courses. Each defense is scheduled individually with the assigned advisor.
