Winter Named Chair of APPE Board

Gretchen Winter, the executive director for the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society in the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been named to a two-year term as chair of the executive board of the Association of Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE).

APPE is an international academic association that brings together university faculty, academic ethics center directors, and interested business leaders to advance scholarship, education, and public dialog about practical and professional ethics and values. By supporting and training the next generation of faculty and professionals, APPE works to improve ethical conduct in the workplace and to advance public dialogue in ethics and values.

“I am truly honored to have been selected for this position,” said Winter. “APPE has been at the cutting edge of practical and professional ethics since its founding nearly 30 years ago, and the organization has provided consistent leadership for faculty, students, and practitioners in researching, defining, and sharing ways to apply professional ethics standards in a wide range of circumstances. I look forward to helping continue its valuable mission.”

Winter has been with the Center for Professional Responsibility since 2007. Before joining the University of Illinois, she spent 18 years at Baxter International Inc., including more than a decade as vice president and counsel, business practices. In that role, she developed Baxter International’s global ethics program and provided guidance to those who saw ethical dilemmas in their work. She is a frequent speaker on professional responsibility, ethics, corporate social responsibility, and legal matters for university classes, professional associations, governments, and corporate as well as not-for-profit organizations within and outside of the United States. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and her JD from the University of Chicago. She serves as president of the board of directors for the Leadership Fellows Association of Leadership Greater Chicago. In addition, she serves on the Board of Visitors for the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
