Vic Anand
Assistant Professor | Accountancy

Vic Anand is entering his second year as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow. Anand joined the Gies College of Business faculty as an Assistant Professor of Accountancy in 2017. His research is in managerial accounting and focuses on the use of goals and targets in accounting settings and cost systems. Anand earned his in accounting from Cornell University, and his professional experience includes serving as a senior analyst with Science Applications International Corporation, a senior consultant with Deloitte Consulting, and a financial analyst and manufacturing engineer with Ford Motor Company.

In order to further the mission of the University of Illinois-Deloitte Foundation Center for Business Analytics, Anand will teach a course called Data Analytics Applications in Accountancy. He will also present at American Accounting Association conferences, including a presentation on simulation-based research at the doctoral colloquium of the AAA’s Managerial Accounting Section conference in January 2019. Anand recently moderated a panel discussion titled “Highlighting Ethical Issues” at the 2018 Partners in Business Ethics Symposium at the University of Illinois.

 


 

Jana Diesner
Associate Professor | Program Director | School of Information Sciences

Jana Diesner is an Associate Professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois. She holds a in societal computing from Carnegie Mellon University, and her research focuses on social computing, human-centered data science, and responsible computing. Diesner joined the Illinois faculty in 2012, and this will be her first year as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow.

She plans to develop and release two case studies – “Governance of Data Analytics” and “Ethics of Data Science” – that will help advance the Center’s mission. She recently gave a talk called “Practical Ethics and Responsible Computing: Discovering Problems and Designing Solutions through Interdisciplinary Research” at the 2018 Partners in Business Ethics Symposium at the University of Illinois.

 


 

Fei Du
Assistant Professor | Accountancy

Fei Du joined Gies College of Business faculty as an Assistant Professor of Accountancy in 2017. She teaches Data Analytics in Managerial Accounting, a course she developed when she arrived Illinois. That course serves to build up students’ data analytics skills and provides interactive workshops for students to work on hands-on data cases in small groups. Du, who earned her from the University of Southern California, is entering her first year as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow.

 


 

Jessen Hobson
Associate Professor | PwC Faculty Fellow | Accountancy

Jessen Hobson is back for his second year as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow. Hobson has taught accounting at Gies College of Business since 2009. He earned his in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006, and his teaching and research interests include financial accounting, audit, and data analytics. Hobson co-developed a course called Data Analytics Applications in Accountancy. As an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow for 2018-2019, Hobson plans to create a case study and promote the Center and its data science initiative at conferences and as a member of the University Data Science Steering Committee. He also moderated a panel discussion titled “Identifying Ethical Challenges” at the 2018 Partners in Business Ethics Symposium at the University of Illinois.


Vishal Sachdev
Clinical Assistant Professor | Director, Illinois MakerLab | Business Administration

Vishal Sachdev is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Business Administration at Gies College of Business, and he is also the director of the Illinois MakerLab. Sachdev joined the Illinois faculty in 2008 after earning his in information systems at the University of Texas at Arlington. Sachdev has taught on a variety of subjects including database design, analytics, programming, system analysis and design, and principles of information systems.

Sachdev is entering his first year as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow. He will develop a scalable infrastructure and pedagogical approaches to teaching analytics to the entire undergraduate student population at Gies College of Business. He also hopes to coordinate an open on analytics for business students.

 


 

Ramanath Subramanyam
Associate Professor | Business Administration

Ramanath Subramanyam, Associate Professor of Business Administration, returns for his second year as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow. Subramanyam earned his from the University of Michigan in 2004, and he has taught at Gies College of Business for 14 years. His research interests include data science for managerial decision-making, software management, information technology (IT) governance, and environmental sustainability. He studies the role of machine learning in abductive and inductive managerial research, project management, and the role of the customer in shaping technological product design. He has had research collaborations with leading firms such as IBM, State Farm Insurance, Infosys, Ford Motor Company, and Ramco Systems.

As part of his role as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow, Subramanyam moderated a session – “Overcoming Ethical Challenges” – at the 2018 Partners in Business Ethics Symposium at the University of Illinois. The session focused on using novel technologies, algorithms, and human psychology to overcome ethical challenges related to data analytics. He also plans to develop another case study this year with datasets, description, and Python code walkthrough.

 


 

Yuqian Xu
Assistant Professor | Business Administration


Yuqian Xu is an Assistant Professor of Operations Management at Gies College of Business. She brings a strong interest in data analytics, risk analysis, and operations management into her role as an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow. Xu earned her in operations management in 2017 from New York University, and her research mainly focuses on interface and the healthcare online market. She has collaborated with companies like IBM, Alibaba, JD.com, Bank of China and others through her research. As an R.C. Evans Data Analytics Fellow, Xu will complete a healthcare online market case study, and she will share that case with the Center.

 


 

Mao Ye
Associate Professor | Finance
